Should we get to choose how we die?

here for a reason no – why should we have to suffer euthanasia yes

Most people believe life is precious, do you? most people fear death, do you? or at least avoid thinking about, do you? as it something we don’t like facing and hope that it will never happen, especially while were young.

Firstly we’ll look at those who don’t believe in Euthanasia. And then explore the other point of view which is that people should be able to choose when they die. And then ill let you know what to think about it later. Most families would have experienced some kind of death which was expected or not expected. One of the themes we studied was the issue of the right to take their own life through assisted suicide, we experienced this through the character of Justice Wargrave who took his own life because he knew he had a brain tumour.

Perspective 1 We shouldn’t be able to choose when we die.

Life should be able to to take its own course, quite like nature. All religious and cultural beliefs reinforce that we were put here for a reason and when our time comes, its time for us to go. Islamic beliefs say that “there is nothing but our life in this world. We live and we die and nothing destroys us but Time”, it is God who gives us this life and chooses when we die. This implies that death occurs naturally and that we shouldn’t intervene. The Christian faith also believes that death should occur naturally. They prohibit anyone who expresses thoughts to take their own life. If we were able to choose when we died, some people would get the message that their life is not worth living and try to take it themselves. Some people face tough challenges in their life and go through rough times, this brings them sadly to thinking about taking their own life. It is best to die naturally, there is no guilt from your family wondering if they have made the wrong decision. Your family can be with you during the final moments comforting you which is what you want. In today’s worlds, there is a major problem with how people think about life. In present-day, the medical practises are so high tech and advanced that we may be at death’s doorstep. Modern medicine is able to keep us alive and prolong our lives, sometimes this would be great especially if we are young, but in other cases, people with terminal illnesses are kept alive with no real quality of life. Another complication to this is that doctors sign a Hippocratic oath swearing that they will preserve life at all cost, this means they will do everything they can to keep someone alive and well. So this at times can affect people allowing them to die when it is the right time for them to go. People now have the right to sign a medical declaration to request if they have a major health event like a stroke, a heart attack that there is medical intervention and there allowed to die naturally. Even dying natrually is not black and white nowadays there are decisions to be made around being kept alive.

Another perspective is should people have the right to be able to choose when they die, this is called euthanasia. This is a painless injection that kills you very peacefully. This is a very relevant topic in today’s society mainly in the western world. Many people feel that if they have a terminal illness and no quality of life that they should be able to go out on their own terms. Euthanasia is legal several countries such as Canada, Belgium, India and Japan. Just imagine your laying in a hospital bed you have been diagnosed with terminal cancer and have no way of getting better you sit there, watching the clock tick, you are starring out the window not being able to do anything, You are a vegetable. You are suffering in pain, your quality of life is poor and your family watches on as you sit there not able to do anything, you are suffering and counting down the days till you go. I have personally experienced watching this happen and it is a cruel thing to watch, although as much as I wanted this person to stay alive I knew she didn’t enjoy this and the best thing for her was to go, but instead, she couldn’t. The best option for this would have been to the have lethal injection. This will End your suffering short and quick. Having this injection is such a relief as it can be done so peacefully also it is death with “dignity”. If someones die with dinity then they are still valued and respected for their own sake. Marya Mannes said, “euthanasia is simply to be able to die at a moment when life is devoid of it”. This is hugely important to some people, as they want to be remembered for the good things they’ve done and who they truly were

So what do you reckon? I believe that we should be able to decide. We are our own person, we should be able to choose when we go. I disagree that people should have to suffer and go through the pain, they should be able to have the option for euthanasia if their life is not worth living and this is what they want. Euthanasia should have specific measures in place for because it is a very huge decision to make, you don’t want to be regretting the decision afterwards. The society we live in today has changed so much over time that people have developed different ideas on what is right and wrong for them and will voice their perspective on what they believe so I’ll ask you the question should we be able to choose how we die?

Why euthaniassa is good

Dont want to suffer, poor quality of life

About the whos life is it anyway

  1. Hi Fergus,

You definitely are on the right track with this. I can see the two very clear perspectives.
You seem to begin to contradict yourself in your first perspective. Look to clarify your point here as it sounds like you are presenting an argument that sits more towards the side of your second perspective.

There are moments when you do not explain some of your ideas with as much thought as you could. For example, when you begin discussing the doctors’ oath that is taken, you skim over the details of this point and it doesn’t end up going where I think you are wanting it to. You do this in a couple of places.

Develop your own opinion a little further. Consider the society you live in and maybe reflect on this a little more as you are concluding the speech.

Reading your speech out loud to yourself and an audience at home will help you to see the areas that I have pointed out in my feedback above.

Best of luck with it and I will see you tomorrow.

    Mrs. Plunkett
